This section undertakes activities which include:-

  • Carrying out socio-economic studies within the industry to determine factors influencing the adoption of recommended technical information.
  • Understanding the socio-economic circumstances, constraints and production possibilities of small holder coffee community and defining appropriate input packages, testing their applicability on the farmer's circumstances and thereafter making recommendations.
  • Assessing the different management practices within the Smallholder and Estate Coffee sectors with a view of establishing the various cost structures and factors influencing profitability in order to find areas of cost structures and the factors influencing profitability in order to find areas of cost reduction and/or an increase in profitability.
  • Establishing the demand and supply functions of the developed coffee varieties e.g. the Ruiru 11 hybrid and factors influencing their adoption.
  • Evaluating the coffee marketing systems in Kenya.
  • Providing an economic interpretation to experimental trials carried out by other research sections
