Introduction

Kitale Demonstration Plot is situated in the northern part of the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The area is suitable for cereal (Maize) growing and has different soils, climatic and physical conditions from any of the existing Coffee Research Foundation (CRF) substations. In the recent past, there has been expansion of coffee by farmers in this region that covers Uasin Gishu, parts of Bungoma, Mt Elgon, Trans Nzoia, Marakwet and West Pokot Districts. The reason for this has been the realization by farmers that they need diversified farming activities as a safety net to changes brought about through the liberation of the economy. The region also has land for expansion and is suitable for coffee growing.
